I became a lawyer for a lot of reasons. One of those reasons was to give back, and one of the best ways to give back is to volunteer.
The Youth About Business program was a perfect fit for me right from the start. It’s about paying it forward and working with kids. I can hardly believe that I’ve been a part of this great organization for 15 years now. Time sure flies when you’re having fun, and working with teenagers and helping them figure out who they are going to become is a privilege. I love every minute of it!
The Summer Business Camp Program experience is a chance for high school students to see up close what it means to be part of the real world. These teenagers are amazing. They are polished, poised, smart and polite. They are driven and focused and their thought-provoking questions astound me. The way I see it, my job is to guide them and show them what they can expect when they finish school and finally get a job “out there” so that whether they become lawyers, accountants, investment bankers or seek to enter any other field they are passionate about, they will have the tools they need and will be better prepared to face the challenges that crop up in the day-to-day work world.
My discussions with the Youth About Business summer business kids varies from day to day. One day, I may be explaining the steps to performing due diligence in a law firm, and the next day I will find myself helping a group of students tweak their oral presentation, which is due at the end of the summer. But, no matter what I’m doing with them, it’s a two-way street. They are learning from me and I am definitely learning from them. These kids have tunnel vision. They want to make it. All they need is a little help. I am proud to be a part of their lives and offer any assistance and guidance that I can to ensure that they succeed. There is nothing like a 16-year-old asking you a business transaction question that can blow you away!
Youth About Business affords these students a chance to work with volunteers like me and to get firsthand experience with experts in the trenches. That is my favorite part of volunteering and why I continue to work with Youth About Business year after year. I get to help talented and terrific kids who may not have had many opportunities if it weren’t for this life-altering program. And yes, it’s true that the students get an inside look at what I do for a living, but the really important part for me is that I get to help these incredible young people see what is possible for them if they work hard and stay on track.
My goal is to inspire them to be the best they can be no matter what professional path they pursue, but my number one reason for working with these amazing young leaders of tomorrow is because they keep me grounded and they inspire me every single day.
